How to Evaluate an Exosome Product Before You Buy

Seven practical things to check before buying an exosome product — manufacturer, biological source, batch-specific COA, particle-count method, finished-product testing, cold-chain handling and verifiable claims.

The exosome and extracellular vesicle market can be confusing. Two products may both be marketed as “exosomes” while providing very different levels of information about what is actually in the vial, who manufactured it, how it was tested, and how it was handled.

So before comparing price — or simply choosing the product with the biggest particle count — here are seven things worth checking.

1. Who Actually Manufactures the Product?

Start with a simple question: who made it?

The company selling an exosome product isn't necessarily the company manufacturing it. That's not inherently a problem — distributors are common throughout many industries — but the manufacturer should be identifiable.

Be cautious when a company repeatedly refers to “our laboratory” or “our manufacturing” but makes it difficult to determine who or where the actual manufacturer is. A professional-looking website isn't proof that a company operates a laboratory.

Look for transparency about:

  • the manufacturer
  • the manufacturing location
  • the relationship between the seller and manufacturer
  • documentation that supports those claims

2. What Is the Biological Source?

“Exosomes” doesn't tell you where the material originated.

Extracellular vesicles can come from different cell types and biological sources. A buyer should be able to determine what source is being represented and obtain meaningful information about it.

If cultured cells are involved, manufacturing history and cell expansion also become relevant questions.

3. Is There a Batch-Specific Certificate of Analysis?

This is one of the most important things to check.

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) reports testing associated with a product or manufacturing lot. Ideally, you should be able to follow a simple chain: product → lot number → COA → test results.

Ask the sharper question

Instead of “Do you have a COA?”, ask “Can I see the COA for the lot I'm purchasing?” A generic specification sheet or a COA from an unrelated batch doesn't provide the same traceability.

4. Look Beyond the Particle Count

Numbers like 50 billion, 100 billion or 150 billion naturally attract attention. But a bigger number does not automatically mean a better product.

Ask:

  • How were the particles counted?
  • What analytical method was used?
  • What particle sizes were measured?
  • Were EV-associated markers evaluated?
  • What other characterization was performed?

Particle detection alone does not establish that every measured particle is an exosome. Extracellular-vesicle research guidelines emphasize using multiple forms of characterization rather than relying on a single measurement.

5. Look for Finished-Product Testing

“Lab tested” is vague. Ask what was actually tested.

Depending on the product and its documentation, finished-product testing may report things such as:

  • sterility
  • endotoxin
  • cell count
  • osmolality
  • particulate matter

These measurements answer different questions and shouldn't be lumped together as one generic measure of “quality.”

6. How Is the Product Stored and Shipped?

Manufacturing isn't the end of the story. Ask: how is the product stored? Who stores it? How is it shipped?

If controlled-temperature handling is required, the seller should be able to explain how the product gets from the manufacturer to the customer.

7. Are the Company's Claims Verifiable?

Scientific language can make marketing sound impressive. Documentation matters more.

Be cautious about sellers making extraordinary promises about treating disease, reversing aging or regenerating damaged tissue without appropriate evidence and regulatory authorization.

FDA registration is not FDA product approval

FDA currently states that there are no FDA-approved exosome products. So don't mentally translate “FDA registered” into “FDA approved.”

The same principle applies throughout your evaluation: look at what can actually be verified rather than what sounds impressive.

Quick Exosome Buying Checklist

Before purchasing, ask:

  • Who actually manufactures the product?
  • What is the biological source?
  • Can I identify the lot number?
  • Is a batch-specific COA available?
  • Is the particle-counting method identified?
  • Is additional EV characterization reported?
  • Is finished-product testing documented?
  • Are storage and shipping requirements clear?
  • Can I determine who stores and fulfills the product?
  • Are the company's manufacturing and regulatory claims verifiable?

If a seller can't clearly answer basic questions about what the product is, where it came from, who manufactured it, how it was tested, and how it reached you, that's worth paying attention to.

The Bottom Line

Don't choose an exosome product based solely on the biggest particle count, the fanciest website or the strongest sales pitch. Look for traceability, characterization, testing and transparency.
